Why Machines Cannot Solve the Translation Problem

Over 60 years ago, scientists confidently claimed that translation would be fully handled by machines in "the next few years." But today, in 2015, adequate machine translation is still not within our grasp. While technology can increase productivity, it is still no substitute for human translators.
